5 Pro Tips For Designing A Website

Websites serve as your digital storefront. Before consumers even interact with your product or service, they’re likely to have visited your webpage to size you up.


The internet offers a plethora of different websites for browsing pleasure, with just a simple click on the keyboard — or touch screen, for that matter.


How do you ensure that your users spend more time on your website? We believe effective website design is key to engaging consumers. We share five website design tips below to help you get started.


1. Hierarchy is Key

You must present information in an effective way. Key information should always appear more prominent so that your visitors know what to focus on. Remember that your website visitors can easily hop to the next site, so you only have a few seconds to catch their attention.


Make sure your website clearly displays what your business is about. You can do this by including an “About Us” tab on your webpage, which customers can visit to learn more about your business. Ideally, the “About Us” tab should sit next to the “Home” tab.


Your Home page is where visitors land when they visit your website, so it is crucial to be crystal clear about your product and service.

2.Negative Space is NOT Negative


You can make negative space work for you if you do it effectively.


Negative space, also known as white space, can actually be a really GOOD thing. It helps your website achieve a more minimalistic look, which can help information appear clearer.


When a web page is cluttered with too many items or messages, it is easy to lose the reader’s attention. Clutter may also potentially confuse your reader, who will find it hard to sieve out key information.


On the other hand, including some negative space in your design will also help draw readers’ attention to key messages.


In fact, a competent User Experience (UX) designer may use negative space to influence user behaviour, and direct users to the information they want them to focus on.

Apple goes with a very minimalist aesthetic, drawing the attention of readers to just one product — the iPhone 11 Pro.


3. User Experience


You’ll want to engineer a great user experience for your website visitors. You can achieve this by designing your website thoughtfully.


When putting together content for a website, make sure the words are easy to read and understand. Avoid technical jargon when you can — make it easy to digest for the average person.


This is how Paypal breaks down information for users into bite-sized, easy-to-follow steps.



You may consider including more pictures, and limit the amount of chunky text.


Notice how American restaurant Overeasy uses a picture slideshow to communicate the dining experience, as opposed to simply writing about it.

OverEasy has a really eye-catching, neon landing page, which encourages users to spend a longer time on their site. This goes a long way in terms of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), as Google will rank your site better.

Ensure that there is a good contrast between your website background and your text. For example, avoid picking a light coloured background if you’re going to present your web copy in light text.

Additionally, it helps to curate complementary colours for your website, so that your site looks visually united.


4.Mobile Optimisation


Thanks to smartphones, people can now browse on the go. When designing your website, check that it’s mobile-friendly. You can have a great design in place, but your efforts will all go to waste if the formatting runs differently on mobile devices.

5.Include a Call to Action


At the end of the day, a website is ineffective if it doesn’t lead to conversions! Whether you want users to sign up for a mailing list, click on your promotion or buy your products or services— you need to lead them by the nose.

When a user lands on the De Kinder Club website, a rectangular pop-up window appears with a Call-To-Action (CTA) button encouraging them to “Preview Classes.” CTA buttons are incredibly useful in directing users towards the information you want them to see.


In the case of Keep Cup, they hook their visitors with compelling, clever copy and insert their “Shop Originals” CTA button just below. The button directs visitors to a range of products.






They’ve adopted a similar approach to entice visitors to sign up for their newsletter. Since their target audience encompasses of environmentally-conscious individuals, this would probably be quite successful.
